Crispy Air Fryer Sichuan Chilli Wings – Crispy, Spicy, and Irresistible!

Looking for a delicious and flavourful twist on classic Chinese chicken wings? Try this Sichuan Crunch Chilli Oil Wings recipe, inspired by the popular salt and pepper wings but with an added kick of heat and numbing spice from Sichuan peppercorns and homemade chilli oil. These wings are crispy, crunchy, and bursting with bold flavours that will satisfy your cravings for Sichuan-style wings!

This is the ultimate fakeaway wings!! This dish takes inspiration from a Chinese takeaway classic 'Salt and Pepper' wings. Perfect balance of Umami and spice. 

Ingredients:

For the Chicken Wings:

  • 8-10 chicken wings (drumettes or flats, as preferred)
  • 1 tbsp corn starch (for crispiness)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder (optional but adds great flavour)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1 Tbs Sichuan Crunch (Adjust to taste by adding more or less)
  • 1 Whole White onion
  • 1 Spring onion

Method:

  1. Prep the Wings:

    • Pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels to remove any excess moisture.
    • In a mixing bowl, toss the chicken wings with corn starch, salt, black pepper, and Chinese five-spice powder. Make sure each wing is coated evenly 
  2. Prep the Onions by cutting it in half then slicing the white onion into half moons and chopping the spring onions
  3. Once the chicken is marinated add in the corn starch making sure the wings are coated individually
  4. Place the wings in your air fryer with the vegetable oil to help the frying process
  5. Fry the wings for 20 minutes at 180c turning halfway through. 
  6. While the wings are frying, add the chopped onion and spring onion to a frying pan with 1tbs of vegetable oil, 2tbs of light soy sauce and Novice Kitchen Sichuan Crunch chilli oil. 
  7. Fry this for 5 minutes to get rid of the rawness.
  8. Once the wings are done, toss the wings in the fried onion sauce. 
  9. Plate the wings and drizzle some more Sichuan Crunch and garnish with some extra spring onions.
